This was the second version of the S-38 family released in 1946 and designed by Raymond Loewy - only the next two variants (B and C) would feature the distinctive round dials for tuning and bandspread.

This half-moon arrangement was copied and used to good effect by the Japanese manufacturer Trio many years later.

Although slide-rule type displays were used for the 'D' and 'E' variants, this well designed set was kept in production until 1961.
