The S-40 was the modernised version of the pre-war S-20 and underwent three versions. The first version featured white dials rather than the later green ones. The later S-40A and B versions involved cosmetic changes (the S-40B has a black speaker grille) and the use of miniature IF coils. The S-40 could have an external S-meter fitted or the new Hallicrafters SP-44 Panoramic Adaptor via the external socket. The set features ANL and AVC, BFO, sensitivity and tone controls and flywheel tuning. These are solid radios that perform well and were the next step up from the popular S-38 series.
